Annotated Bibliography of Memoirs, Biographies, Historical Accounts, Travelogues, and Reflections about Pakistan
Written by Christian missionaries serving in Pakistan and their children
This Annotated Bibliography was initially compiled, annotated, and amended by Dr. Jonathan S. Addleton, a member of the MCS Class of 1975, and advisor to the PFI Director. This list benefited from the input of others and remains a work-in-progress.
The Pakistan Fellowship International is grateful to be able to use and share this asset, because it includes most of the recorded stories, written by our community, which we want to preserve, share, and pass on to the next generations. Where available, we've provided links to sites where books can be ordered. Let’s read, share and keep adding more stories.
Update (June 2023): We have added publications on Islam, by Dan Brown, PhD, after the publications about Pakistan.

The book was prepared as a textbook for Pakistan's Christian high school students, and then adapted for a worldwide readers. The story goes back a long way, possibly as far as the Wise Men arriving in Bethlehem. the Apostle Thomas's likely arrival in Taxila, the Jesuits in the court of Emperor Akbar and the missionaries of the nineteenth century -- and then the burst of Christian growth, activity and revival in the twentieth century. In 190 illustrated pages it opens up an amazing range of real life stories that make for a vibrant church today. It is a story sadly rarely told and appreciated.

(Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1996)
Traces the emergence of modern debates over sunna, focusing in particular on Egypt and Pakistan where these controversies have raged most fiercely, and assesses the implications of new approaches to Islamic law on contemporary movements of Islamic revival. Using the case of modern Islam as a starting-point, the author considers how adherents of any great tradition deal with change. Also translated into Indonesian, Turkish and Urdu.

(3rd edition. Chichester, UK: Wiley, 2017)

Brown, Daniel (editor)
The Wiley Blackwell Concise Companion to the Hadith
(Chichester, UK: Wiley, 2020)
Alongside the Qur'an, the hadith forms a second major body of Islamic scripture, and much of Islamic belief and practice rests on the hadith including Islamic law, Islamic theology, Qur'anic interpretation, political thought, and personal behavior. Yet despite its importance to Muslims worldwide and its indispensable role as a source for early Islamic history, the hadith remains unexplored territory for many non-specialist readers. This is a concise overview of both Islamic and Western traditions of hadith study, offering up-to-date scholarship and providing readers with an essential guide to this distinctive aspect of Islam.
